Carnival Freedom is finally getting its whale tail back.
Again.
The Carnival Cruise Line ship is currently undergoing a lengthy dry dock in Marseille, France, and one of the most obvious changes is the return of Carnival's distinctive winged funnel.
Normally, replacing a cruise ship funnel probably wouldn't warrant much attention.
But Carnival Freedom's funnel has had a particularly unfortunate few years.
It has caught fire twice, been repaired, completely rebuilt, damaged again and spent more than two years sailing around looking decidedly less Carnival-like than the rest of the fleet.
Hopefully this one has better luck.
Carnival Freedom's new whale tail is taking shape
Carnival Freedom entered the Chantier Naval de Marseille shipyard in early September for more than a month of scheduled dry dock work.
Carnival has now shared images from the shipyard showing the new funnel being installed.
The replacement retains Carnival's instantly recognisable red, white and blue whale-tail shape, although it is noticeably shorter than the original.
It's replacing the straight, shortened funnel Carnival Freedom has been carrying since 2024.
And there's quite a story behind why it looked that way.
The first funnel fire happened in 2022
Carnival Freedom's funnel troubles began on 26 May 2022.
The ship was docked in Grand Turk when a fire broke out inside its funnel, producing dramatic images of flames and thick black smoke above the ship.
Carnival's emergency response team extinguished the fire and no guests or crew were injured.
The damage was significant enough, however, that passengers were eventually transferred to Carnival Conquest for the journey back to Port Canaveral while Carnival Freedom headed to Freeport for repairs.
Three upcoming Carnival Freedom sailings were also cancelled.
The damaged wings of the distinctive funnel were removed, leaving Carnival Freedom sailing with a much less glamorous temporary funnel while it waited for a permanent replacement.
And it was quite a wait.

The whale tail finally returned in 2023
More than a year later, Carnival Freedom entered dry dock in Cádiz, Spain.
During the 16-day refurbishment in October 2023, the ship received a completely new whale-tail funnel along with Carnival's red, white and blue hull livery and upgrades throughout the ship.
Carnival even celebrated its return, announcing that Freedom was “once again sporting an iconic winged funnel.”
Everything was back where it belonged.
For about five months.
Then it caught fire again
On 23 March 2024, Carnival Freedom was sailing through stormy weather in the Bahamas when fire once again broke out in its funnel.
Passengers reported seeing a lightning strike immediately before the fire, although Carnival's initial statements said the cause was being investigated.
Videos from onboard showed flames coming from the port side of the whale tail before part of the structure collapsed onto Deck 10.
Once again, there were no reported injuries and the fire was extinguished by the ship's crew.
The damaged section was subsequently removed and Carnival Freedom returned to service with another shortened, straight funnel.
And that's essentially how she has looked ever since.
Now the whale tail is back. Again.
More than two years later, Carnival Freedom's current dry dock has finally provided the opportunity for another replacement.
Recent shipyard images show the distinctive wings being installed around the funnel, restoring the silhouette most people immediately associate with Carnival Cruise Line.
It's not quite identical to the original.
The new structure is shorter, but after a couple of years sailing around with what effectively looked like a straight exhaust stack, it's unmistakably Carnival again.

The dry dock isn't solely about appearances.
Carnival Freedom is also undergoing routine technical maintenance, class inspections and general upkeep during its stay in Marseille.
When will Carnival Freedom return to service?
Carnival Freedom is scheduled to resume passenger operations on 9 October 2026, beginning with an eight-night Western Mediterranean cruise from Barcelona.
That will be followed by a 13-night repositioning cruise back across the Atlantic before the ship returns to its regular programme of shorter Bahamas cruises from Port Canaveral.
Then in 2027, Carnival Freedom is scheduled to move to Norfolk, Virginia for year-round cruising.
And, presumably, everyone will be hoping the third version of the whale tail gets to stay attached for considerably longer than the last one.
Because at this point, Carnival Freedom's funnel has probably earned its own loyalty status.
