Remote Working From a Cruise Ship: My Portable Triple-Screen Setup

Working remotely while travelling has never been easier, but cruise cabins and hotels present a unique challenge: limited desk space.

Over the years I've experimented with several portable workstation setups while travelling, including cruises, domestic travel and hotel stays. After testing different options, I've settled on a setup that gives me three screens while remaining compact enough to fit in carry-on luggage.

Whether you're providing business services remotely, managing an online business, working remotely for an employer, or simply need to stay productive while travelling, having an efficient workspace can make all the difference.

Why Three Screens?

When working remotely, it's common to have multiple applications open simultaneously, such as:

Working from a single laptop screen is certainly possible, but productivity can quickly suffer when you're constantly switching between windows.

A three-screen setup allows me to work almost exactly as I would from my office while still enjoying the flexibility of travelling.

My Previous Setup: Clip-On Triple Screen Monitor

For several years I used a clip-on triple-screen monitor that attached directly to my laptop.

What I liked

What I didn't like

❌ Heavier to transport

❌ More difficult to fit into luggage

❌ Less flexible if I wanted to quickly take my laptop elsewhere

The biggest advantage of this setup was familiarity. Once assembled, it felt very similar to sitting at my desk at home with multiple monitors.

If you're planning to work primarily from your cabin and don't intend to move around much, a clip-on monitor system can still be an excellent option.

My Current Setup: Independent Portable Monitors

I've since moved to a pair of independent portable monitors alongside my laptop.

This setup still provides three screens but offers significantly more flexibility when travelling.

That final point has become one of the biggest benefits for me.

When working from a cruise ship, I don't always want to stay in my cabin. Sometimes I'll work from a lounge area, coffee shop, observation deck or another quiet space around the ship.

With the independent monitor setup, I can simply unplug the laptop and go.

With the clip-on system, the entire workstation effectively travelled with me.

A laptop riser is one of those products you don't realise you need until you start using one.

Raising the laptop screen improves viewing angles, creates a more comfortable workstation and helps reduce neck strain during long work sessions.

It also allows the portable monitors to sit at a more natural height alongside the laptop.

Bluetooth Keyboard & Mouse

Using an external keyboard and mouse makes a huge difference when working remotely for extended periods.

I use the Logitech Pebble keyboard and mouse because they're lightweight, compact and specifically designed for portability. I can also paid them with multiple devices to easily switch between my laptop and iPad.

Working From a Cruise Cabin

One of the most common questions I receive is whether cruise cabin desks are actually large enough for a multi-screen workstation.

In my experience, the answer is yes.

I've successfully used this setup on multiple cruises without any issues.

The independent monitor setup is particularly useful because the monitors can be positioned to suit the available desk space.

Even when working from hotel rooms, airport lounges or temporary workspaces, the setup adapts easily.

My Biggest Tip

If you're planning to work remotely while travelling, focus on flexibility rather than trying to perfectly replicate your home office.

The ability to quickly disconnect your laptop and work elsewhere often becomes more valuable than having the most elaborate workstation possible.

My current setup gives me the best of both worlds:
