Passengers aboard Carnival Splendor have received a significant itinerary change, with the ship cancelling its scheduled visit to Napier, New Zealand, due to forecast unfavourable weather conditions.
However, there's a silver lining for those onboard. The revised itinerary includes an earlier visit to Tauranga and an overnight stay in Auckland, giving passengers considerably more time to explore New Zealand's largest city.
The Carnival Cruise Line ship departed Sydney on 12 October 2026 for a 10-night New Zealand cruise, with scheduled visits to Napier, Tauranga, Auckland and the Bay of Islands before returning to Sydney on 22 October.
Napier Cancelled Due to Forecast Weather
According to Cruise Hive, passengers received a notification from Captain Mario Imbimbo on 13 October advising that the ship would no longer visit Napier on Friday, 16 October.
The decision was made because of a developing weather system expected to bring unfavourable conditions to the Napier area.
The captain explained that passenger safety and comfort were behind the decision to adjust the itinerary.
While the notification did not specify the exact weather conditions prompting the cancellation, forecasts for the Hawke's Bay region indicated potentially rough seas and strong winds.
Rather than continuing with the original schedule, Carnival has rearranged the remaining ports to avoid the anticipated conditions.
Carnival Splendor's Revised New Zealand Itinerary
The changes affect three of the ship's scheduled port visits.
| Port | Revised itinerary |
|---|---|
| Napier – 16 October | Cancelled |
| Tauranga – 16 October | 7am–6.30pm |
| Auckland – 17–18 October | 8am Saturday to 6.30pm Sunday |
| Bay of Islands – 19 October | 7am–4pm, unchanged |
Tauranga will now be visited a day earlier than originally planned, with passengers receiving approximately 11.5 hours in port.
The biggest change, however, is in Auckland.
Instead of arriving on Sunday, 18 October for a single daytime visit, Carnival Splendor will arrive on Saturday morning and remain in port overnight.
This gives passengers approximately 34.5 hours in Auckland, compared with just over 10 hours under the original itinerary.
The revised Auckland visit is also reflected in the Port of Auckland's official cruise schedule, which lists Carnival Splendor arriving on 17 October and departing on 18 October.
The scheduled Bay of Islands visit remains unchanged, and the ship is still expected to return to Sydney on Thursday, 22 October.
An Unexpected Overnight Stay in Auckland
While missing Napier will undoubtedly disappoint passengers looking forward to exploring the Hawke's Bay region, the extended Auckland visit offers a different opportunity.
With the ship remaining in port overnight, passengers will have much more flexibility to explore the city without the usual pressure of returning onboard after a few hours.
Auckland's waterfront, restaurants, shopping precincts and attractions will all be within reach, while those wanting to venture further afield may have more time to organise sightseeing.
An overnight port visit also creates opportunities to experience the city in the evening, something that isn't always possible on a typical cruise itinerary.
For passengers who enjoy exploring independently, the additional time could turn an unexpected itinerary change into a memorable part of the holiday.
An overnight stay gives Carnival Splendor passengers the opportunity to experience Auckland after dark.
What Happens to Booked Shore Excursions?
Carnival has advised that passengers who booked shore excursions through the cruise line for Napier will receive refunds to their Sail & Sign accounts.
Excursions originally booked for Tauranga and Auckland are being adjusted to accommodate the revised arrival dates and times.
Passengers with privately arranged tours may need to contact their operators directly regarding cancellations or rescheduling.
It's also worth remembering that cruise itineraries can change at relatively short notice, particularly when weather conditions affect a ship's ability to safely enter or leave a port.
While disappointing, these decisions are generally made with passenger and crew safety as the priority.
Weather Continues to Disrupt Cruise Itineraries
The latest changes highlight how quickly weather conditions can affect cruise holidays, even when ships are operating on established itineraries.
Cruise lines regularly adjust routes, arrival times and port visits to avoid potentially unsafe conditions, with the captain and shoreside operations teams assessing the available forecasts.
For Carnival Splendor passengers, the loss of Napier is unfortunate, but the revised itinerary still includes three New Zealand destinations and an unusually long visit to Auckland.
And for those who enjoy having plenty of time to explore a port, an unexpected overnight stay might not be such a bad consolation prize.
