Free Sydney Ferry Travel During September 2026 Industrial Action
UPDATE: Confirmed dates for the fare-free period are 11th September to 6th October 2026.
If you're cruising from Sydney during September 2026, there may be an unexpected bonus for your pre- or post-cruise sightseeing: free travel on much of the Sydney Ferries network.
Protected industrial action is taking place across Sydney Ferries throughout September, with passengers being warned that services may be affected by cancellations, delays and timetable changes.
As part of the industrial action, fares will not be collected on affected Sydney Ferries services during September, meaning passengers can travel free of charge.
The Manly Fast Ferry services are excluded from the free-travel arrangement, so don't assume every ferry departing Circular Quay will be free.
What Cruise Passengers Need to Know
If you're sailing from the Overseas Passenger Terminal at Circular Quay, this could be a great opportunity to see more of Sydney Harbour before or after your cruise.
However, the industrial action also means services may be disrupted, so:
- Check ferry services before setting off.
- Allow extra time for delays or cancellations.
- Don't rely on a tight ferry connection before your cruise check-in.
- Check whether your particular service is included in the free-fare arrangements.
Transport for NSW recommends checking current information through its website, Opal Travel app and transport alerts before travelling.
